KNOW YOUR WATERSHED
The Know Your Watershed program is designed to address the CT State Science Curriculum Standards, especially those related to watersheds and estuaries. It incorporates basic concepts of watershed dynamics including run-off, water cycle, pollution, etc. with an introduction to the estuarine habitats in Long Island Sound.
Based on New Haven Harbor at historic City Point, the Know Your Watershed program brings students on the water with dockside programs on topics like water chemistry and marine life identification as well as on-land with shoreline explorations. A hands-on watershed dynamics activity ‘connects the dots’ for this program.
Completed in approximately three hours, the program is designed to occur within a normal school day and can accommodate up to 32 students broken into 4 groups. The following is a typical schedule for a day:
9:00 – 9:10am Class arrives / Intro
9:15 – 9:40am Station Rotation I
9:45 - 10:20am Station Rotation II
10:25 – 10:50am Station Rotation III
10:55 – 11:30am Station Rotation IV
11:35 – 12:00pm Wrap-up Activity
Our stations include Watershed Dynamics, Marine Life Discovery, Weather, and Water Quality. These stations were created to develop a broad overview of New Haven Harbor’s exciting biotic and abiotic characteristics – a foundation that can be built upon in future classroom studies using the information collected by students.
